Arnold will receive Gross Scholarship--Pitcher honored May 20, 2005 - Jay Strasner - (Editor)

Haydon Arnold has been named the winner of the Ralph Gross Athletic Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior each year at Nashville High School. Jeff Gross, son of Ralph Gross, made the announcement this week.

“On behalf of the Ralph Gross family, we are honored to award this scholarship to Haydon Arnold,” Jeff Gross said. “I had the privelege to watch Haydon in several games and he plays the game like it’s supposed to be played.

“He, along with senior teammate Ryan Scott, were the glue to the Scrappers on the mound this season, and Haydon was also solid at the plate in helping his team come within one game of advancing to the championship game of the state tournament.”

The senior pitcher/infielder was named the MVP of the First Annual Ralph Gross Memorial Tournament earlier this season in Nashville.

Arnold was also named to the AAA all-state team and named three times to the all-district and all-regional teams. In addition, Arnold was an outstanding football player for the Scrappers on the gridiron.

“Haydon is a fierce competitor,” said Nashville baseball coach Kyle Slayton. “He has been our leader for the last three years and will definitely be missed next season.”

The scholarship was established in 2003 in honor of the late Ralph Gross, a 1952 NHS five-sport standout. The award is designed to assist a student-athlete who attends college and participates in sports.

Past winners of the scholarship include Drew Curtis (2003) and Keller Reeves (2004).
