Ralph Gross Tournament begins March 3, 2006 - No reporter cited

The first pitch of the Second Annual Ralph Gross Memorial Tournament will be thrown out on Thursday, March 2 with three games on the slate at Wilson Park.
Eight teams will compete in this year’s tournament. Lafayette County, De Queen, Horatio, Pleasant Grove, Texas, Hope, Ashdown and Arkadelphia will join the Scrappers in the 8-team field.
Thursday, March 2
Game 1: Ashdown Panthers vs. Hope Bobcats 3 p.m.
Game 2: Pleasant Grove Hawks vs. DeQueen Leopards 5:30 p.m.
Game 3: Nashville Scrappers vs. Arkadelphia Badgers 8 p.m.
Friday, March 3
Game 4: Horatio Lions vs. Lafayette County Cougars 3 p.m.
Game 5: Loser Game 2 vs. Loser Game 3 5:30 p.m.
Game 6: Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 3 8 p.m.
Saturday, March 4
Game 7: Loser Game 4 vs. Loser Game 1 10 a.m.
Game 8: Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 1 12:30 p.m.
Game 9: Winner Game 7 vs. Winner Game 5 3 p.m.
Game 10: Loser Game 8 vs. Loser Game 6 5:30 p.m.
Game 11: Winner Game 8 vs. Winner Game 6 8 p.m.
The tournament is organized by the family of the late Ralph Gross, who was considered one of the best athletes to ever don the Orange and Black at NHS.
Gross was a five-sport letterman in the early 1950’s who scored more than 1,000 points on the basketball court and captain of the Scrapper football team. He was also a standout in baseball and track. Gross won 10 letters during his time at NHS.
“We’re excited about hosting it,” Coach Kyle Slayton said. “The Gross family does a great job with the tournament. We expect some great baseball.”

Gross’s son, Jeff, president of Pro-Day baseball camps, will throw out the first pitch before the Nashville/Hope game Thursday evening.
