ROSBORO – The Centerpoint School Board approved the school calendar for 2008-09, the salary schedule for next year and the resignation of an elementary art teacher and librarian.

While reviewing the district financial report, Superintendent Lewis Diggs told the board that the district had to cancel some of the away softball games this spring because of the high cost of diesel.

“The cost of fuel is eating up our budget,” Diggs said.

He said they had “carefully reviewed somethings we travel to do” in order to cut down on fuel costs.

The district is down $20,000 in taxes coming in compared to March last year.

“Next year is when we will lose money if industry does not come back,” Diggs added.

The closure of Bean Lumber has adversely affected the district. Over 40 students have been lost as well as a sizeable chunk of the tax base.

Diggs next told the board about a Special Education student discipline problem.

The 15 year old student has a problem “keeping his hands off other students.”

An impartial advocate recommended suspending the student to home-bound services for the remainder of the school year.

The board approved 7-0.

Diggs recommended the board approve the school calendar for 2008-09.

“It is almost the same as last year. We have added two snow days,” he told the board.

Board member Damon Daniels asked why the district did not have spring break the same time as other schools.

“We can’t get back with the colleges because of state testing,” Diggs said.

He went on to say that the state has actually looked at having a statewide spring break the same week for all schools and colleges, but such a measure would have to be approved by the Legislature.

The 2008-09 calendar was approved 7-0.

Diggs told the board that two days had to be added to this year’s calendar because of snow. The school year will be extended to May 29 and 30 this year.
This was also approved 7-0.
