MOUNT IDA – The Mount Ida City Council approved a resolution authorizing the city to enter into a water purchasing contract with the Montgomery County Regional Public Water Authority at their regular meeting Monday evening at the Mount Ida Civic Center, and the council also heard a report on the status of the Mount Ida Volunteer Fire Department and a request from a citizen to promote tourism in the area.
Council members approved Resolution 2007-04 unanimously on all three readings Monday, making it effective immediately so that city water will now be treated by Montgomery County Regional Public Water Authority facilities.
Faron Foley, fire chief of the Mount Ida Volunteer Fire Department, addressed the council Monday on the status of the department. Foley has been a member of the department since 1986, and he informed the council the ISO rating used to determine insurance rates is 7 inside the city limits and nine elsewhere in the county.
Foley also said the department’s pumper truck was put into service in 1990 and is due for replacement in 2010, adding that the department currently has about $37,000 in a truck fund CD, about one-third of what it will take to replace the existing vehicle.
Foley passed out brochures to Mayor Jo Childress and members of the council featuring trucks which might be considered for the department and reminded them that if a new truck is put into service, the department will receive a full credit on the ISO rating which will benefit all home owners in the city.
Foley noted that the department has responded to an ever-increasing volume of calls over the last decade, going from 23 calls in 1996 to 78 in 2002 and 216 in 2006. He also reminded the council that the department operates solely on Act 833 funds with no budget from the city.
