Delight plans ‘save our school’ meeting Sept. 6Lawrence Graves

DELIGHT - A Delight School District group favoring passage of a proposed 6-mill tax hike has planned a “Save Our School” meeting for Thursday, Sept. 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the school gymnasium.
The district will vote on the proposal Sept. 18 with early voting beginning Sept. 11. If approved, the school millage would increase the district millage to 40 mills. Carey Smith with Stephens, Inc., is expected to be on hand to answer any questions.
Delight’s district is faced with a deteroriating financial condition and declining enrollment.
The district opened the school year with an enrollment of 333 students, according to board President Jim Kirkham.
Districts with an average daily enrollment of less than 350 students over a two-year period can voluntarily merge with a larger district of their choice or be forced to merge with one by the state, according to Julie Johnson Thompson, state department of education communications director.
Asked why district patrons should vote for the millage hike when a declining enrollment might force the school to merge, Kirkham said if district patrons vote against the tax “they can rest assured it would hurt us badly.”
Passing the millage would increase school revenues by about $110,000 a year, Kirkham said.
