Fake checks in lottery scam circulating in the community August 20, 2008 - No reporter cited

According to Pike County Chief Deputy Pep Glenn, there is once again check fraud circulating in the area. Letters with fake checks are being mailed out in the community.

The letter states that the recipient has won the 2008 North American Sweepstake Lottery held on June 25, 2008 in the second category.

It goes on to say that the company has made several attempts to reach the recipient and that they won $125,000.

A check is included in the letter from Bank of the West in California in the amount of $4,980, but when Glenn called the number on the check, the number was to a business in Florida.

According to Glenn, he had made several attempts to contact Kevin Adams who is listed as a claim agent with a phone number on the letter. On Monday afternoon, he called the number again and spoke with Julia Clark, listed as a promotion manager on the letter. When Clark found out who was calling and Glenn’s occupation, she immediately told Glenn that he would have to talk to Kevin Adams and hung up the phone.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the matter.
