NASHVILLE – Preliminary plans for a proposed community center are now on hold as the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation is looking into possibly assisting the UPLIFT Committee with the center.
According to UPLIFT Committee member Verna Hockaday, “as of now, UPLIFT is on hold to see if the foundation comes through. The community center will be valued between $8 to $10 million dollars.”
The proposed plans for the center include a learning center that will offer an expansion of academic enrichment activities. Some of the activities include, but are not limited to, character education, drug and violence prevention programs, art music and counseling.
She added that the committee appreciated the Guns and Hoses charity baseball game that took place last summer. “We will probably do it again, if they are willing.”
In addition to Hockaday, UPLIFT Committee members are: Phil Brown, Mayor Mike Reese, Monica Clark, Billy Mack, Don White, Gerry Wenta and David Byers.
The UPLIFT Community Center will be “totally funded by donations, fundraisers and grants” and “will never ask for a new city tax,” according to the mission statement.
