MINERAL SPRINGS—The Mineral Springs Hornets wowed a very anxious sea of green and gold with a rushing display that will undoubtadly wreak havok on defenses throughout the season.

Six different players carried the ball for a combined total of 271 yards and four touchdowns, as the Hornets look to bull their way through the competition this year. Rodrea Jones led the way for the offense with 162 yards and three touchdowns, with Shaun Richardson close behind with 105 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

The inside game will rely heavily on Senior Braiden McDonald, who crashed into the trenches seven times for 33 yards, and Malcolm Lampkins carrying the ball four times for 17 yards, followed by Jason Ware with one carry for a yard.

Although the Hornets took advantage of every opportunity to work on their running game, it doesn’t mean that the passing game was ignored.

Senior Quarterback Tyler Haddan threw the ball nine times, connecting with four for 68 yards as he led the team from behind Center Drew Gauldin. Richardson proved that he can do more than just run the ball, going three for three for 26 yards and a touchdown pass to Cameron Miller.

Miller led all receivers with three catches for 46 yards, followed by Jones who caught two passes for 26 yards, Richardson with one for 19 yards and Haddan with one for three yards.

The defense flexed their muscles as well, with Eddie Reed recording several tackles and one sack for a safety, and another sack that he shared with Lampkins.

The defensive backs revealed their eye for the ball with Dominique Lampkins recording two interceptions with Ware, M. Lampkins and Aaron McDonald among others who contributed on defense.

Coach Gary Segrest informed his players of his expectations before the scrimmage began. He wanted to see the three “E’s” on the field: execution, enthusiasim and effort. His team didn’t disappoint, needing only five plays to go 60 yards on the practice field for a touchdown.

The defense wasn’t going to lay down for the offense and stopped the second series after only three plays with D. Lampkin’s first interception of the evening.

The offense wasn’t shaken by the turnover, responding with Jones carring the ball three of four plays that culminated in a 45 yard run for a touchdown.

Reed led the defense to their only score of the night, when they held the offense for two plays on the goal line before sacking Haddan for a safety.

Haddan, Jones, and Richardson unloaded on the defense, taking the ball down the field four consecutive times for a score, with Miller scoring the only passing touchdown of the scrimmage.

The team took a short break before taking the field for the final two series of plays.

Richardson led the offense from the quarterback position, moving the ball 40 yards downfield before the defense decided enough was enough and stopped them on fourth and ten.

Jones capped off the night with a 44 yard run for his third touchdown of the night.

Mineral Springs will host DeQueen Friday, August 29 with the scrimmage game starting at 7 p.m. Their first game of the season will be at Norphlet September 5.
