MINERAL SPRINGS - The Mineral Springs Hornets looked right at home under the lights Friday night as they participated in a split squad scrimmage at Hornet Stadium Friday night.
The stands were full of Hornet fans ready to see some action, and they weren’t disappointed, with Shaun Richardson presenting his own brand of primetime football.
Richardson ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more as the Hornets unveiled a new spread offense, with Richardson taking snaps from the shotgun.
The night started with an introduction of the Hornet Marching Band, the Jr. High and Sr. High Hornet cheerleaders, and then the Jr. Hornet football team.
The Mineral Springs Hornet football team introduced themselves to a captive audience before taking to the field.
The White team marched the ball down the field with Richardson leading the way, with runs of 22 and 19 yards, before scoring on a one yard run.
Keon Piggee proved that the second string defense wasn’t intimidated by the first string offense, when he intercepted a Richardson pass to end the second drive.
The White team took to the air again with Richardson completing a 34 yard pass to Demetrius Heberts, and a 12 yard pass to Dominique Lampkins for a touchdown.
The highlight of the night happened during the second half of the scrimmage, when Richardson recovered from a busted play and flew downfield for a 67 yard touchdown.
Richardson completed a 14 yard pass to Eddie Reed to round out the scoring for the White team.
Hornet Coach Don Cooley was very pleased with his team’s performance Friday night.
“I feel our first team offense clicked well at times, and our defense flew to the ball,” Cooley said.
The Hornets travel to DeQueen Tuesday night to face the Leopards at 7 p.m.
