I want to be the boss January 24, 2008 - No reporter cited

I am afraid that we are raising a generation of people that do not know how to think for themselves. They need a cash register to tell them how much change to give you back in return. And don’t try to give them an amount that would allow you to receive a solid dollar instead of a bunch of change. Some will hand you back anything over the amount and look at you like you don’t know how to count.

I was told of an incident where a lady ordered a McRib sandwich from a counter worker in training (I hope she was still in training). The young lady placed a Big Mac on the lady’s tray. When the lady told her that she didn’t order a Big Mac, the girl replied that she knew that, but didn’t know how to ring up a McRib.

Young people are willing to look for a job. But, they want to start at the top and only work when they want to. My son told me about a friend of his that filled out an application and was called back for an interview. The young man was so excited, because apparently, several other guys he knew didn’t even get an interview.

He walked into the office and answered every question with poise and confidence. Finally, the opportunity arose for the young man to ask questions of his own.
Instead of asking what kind of work he would be doing, he informed the interviewer that he only wanted to work certain hours with a select few other employees. Apparently, he didn’t like some of the other employees.

This is the attitude that I just don’t understand. I have never been able to walk into a business and tell them when I would work and what job I was willing to do.
We need to teach young people that promotions come after hard work, not before. They need to learn the basics of a business before attempting to change everything “for the better.”

Maybe parents are to blame. We give everything to our kids, even when they have not earned it. We congratulate them for being mediocre and never expect them to excel in anything, except sports. It’s time that we teach our kids that success comes after hard work. They need to understand that everything is not going to be handed to them on a silver platter. Young people study hard in school and learn the basics. You can look everything else up on the internet.

Hey, but that is just my view from the canopy of the jungle.
