It’s National Police Week: Do you care? May 17, 2007 - | News staff

After doing some research, I found out that this week is designated as National Police Week.

Brandon (Managing Editor) and I went to several local administration departments on Monday morning to see what the city and/or county had planned for the special week-long appreciation.

Nothing was planned. I know the week is generally for remembrance.

I must admit that I was shocked that one of the most thankless jobs (next to teaching) was not being acknowledged with at least one day of remembrance, ribbon or anything.

Granted, the men and women serving within Howard County cannot just take several hours off each day to attend vigils, prayer service, etc.

However, some form of thanks and appreciation should be sent to the men and women who everyday put their lives on the line to protect people that they may not even know.

When I come to work, I just about know what to expect when I walk through the door, especially if it is a Monday or Thursday. But, police officers don’t exactly have that luxury.

When I am tired, I can go home and take a nap or a day off and no one would care. If one or two police officers did that – the community could suffer instantly.

Whether some of you like the police or not, the truth is we need them. Their passion and drive that they possess alone to protect and serve with little pay is enough for me to say ‘thank you’ for. That’s not mentioning the countless hours of paperwork and precious time away from their family.

I know most police officers do not want you to pat them on the back or tell them how great they are each day, but, I believe a simple ‘thank you’ is due to all who put their lives and the stability of their families on the line for us all.

So, from me to all who serve and protect in any capacity...Thank you!
