Man drowns over the weekend on Lake Ouachita July 2, 2009 - No reporter cited

A Pike County man was reported missing late Saturday evening, June 27, from Lake Ouachita. According to Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports, Jerry Don Hughes, III, 20, of Kirby, walked away from where his family was purportedly staying over the weekend, and had not been seen since.

Montgomery County deputies, Cpl. Jeremy Lea and Thomas Goad were dispatched. They, along with members of the Corp of Engineers and Mountain Harbor Security, began a search along the shoreline, where at approximately 3:45 a.m., the deceased body of Hughes was found in the vicinity of the Joplin Campground.

Pike County was notified to contact Hughes parents; Katrina and George Jordan of Kirby.

Sources near the scene related that Hughes was seen walking along the shoreline on Saturday night around 10:30. Deputy Coroner Reith Stanley and members of the Montgomery County Sheriffs Office, returned to the scene in the daylight hours and found the location where Hughes was believed to have slipped into the water.

Hughes was pronounced dead at 5:00 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Reith Stanley.

The body has been sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab for autopsy. Further investigation is pending results of crime lab report.
