Rattlers Strike Horatio Lions 40-0 in season openerFreeman Henderson
The Murfreesboro Rattlers rolled out their air arm onto Holloway Field Friday night and before the battle was over dropped back in the trenches to shut out the 3-A Horatio Lions 40 to zip. Four touchdowns came via air and two by land.
Horatio, once a member of the old Red River Conference, 7B, 7A and finally up to 7AA with Murfreesboro, moved up to 7AAA status last year. Though the years the Rattlers have fared well against their old foe.
In the past 20 years, since Coach Roger Featherston 18th year reign as Rattler head mentor, Murfreesboro, owns a 16-4 advantage in football victories including 2-0 since Coach Jay Turley took over in 2006. In that stretch of football relationships Murfreesboro has out scored Horatio 463 to 259. Murfreesboro widest margin was in 2003 when the Lion’s drubbed the Rattlers 42-12.
Kenneth Blake returned the Lions opening kick off to the MHS 46. In eight plays, including QB Marc McRae’s strike to Zach Bufkin who got 21 yards on the play, MHS moved to the Lion 9. Horatio halted the drive when Talen Chandler intercepted and returned to the Lion 35. Two plays later Blake intercepted the first of his of his two interceptions for the night and the Rattlers at the Horatio 45 was on their way. Going to the air McRae hit Bufkin for 13, DeMarco White for 15, Garrett Gills for 8, before tossing to Ethan Crocker who took it 10 yards into the end zone for 6. With 7:13 the pat kick failed but the Rattlers were up 6-0.
