NASHVILLE – The Nashville Scrapperette track team will enter the 4A state track meet as the favorite today at Lake Hamilton High School in Hot Springs.
The Scrapperettes are aware of the bulls-eye on their back and are ready to earn their third consecutive state title.
“We’re probably the team to beat,” Coach Ron Alexander said.
Alexander went on to say, “We qualified girls in 13 of 17 events and will have multiple girls in seven events, so we should win.”
He was quick to point out that the Scrapperettes will have to live up to the expectations if they are going to claim their own three-peat.
Senior Jasmine Ellis looks forward to leading the Scrapperettes to one more state title before graduation.
Ellis will compete in five events, one short of the maximum allowed. She will compete in the 200m dash, 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, high jump, long jump, and triple jump.
Ellis has dominated the 4A track scene for two years with high point honors in the 2008 and 2009 7-4A district meet, high point honors in last year’s 4A state meet and a victory in last year’s heptathlon.
Melissa Millwood has qualified in four events, including the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, long jump and pole vault.
Millwood set a district mark in the 300m hurdles last week at Ashdown and should provide a one-two finish with teammate J. Ellis.
The future looks bright with Freshman phenom Monisa Poole qualifying in three events.
Poole had a second place finish in the 100m dash and victories in the high jump and the 400m dash.
“I was surprised by Poole’s win in the 400m dash,” Alexander stated.
Poole came from behind to win the 400m dash by less than half a second and almost set a sr. high district record in the high jump.
Sherri Ellis will compete in the 800m hurdles and will join sister Jasmine in the triple jump.
Jaleesa Jetton qualified on standard in the 100m dash and Chelsea Vinyard will compete in the pole vault.
The Scrapperettes will compete in all three relay races.
Millwood, Jetton, Poole and Jasmine Witherspoon will compete in the 4x100 relay; Jetton, Millwood, S. Ellis and Poole will compete in the 4x400m relay; and S. Ellis, Tiffani Jones, Wimberly Hughes and Rachel Reed will compete in the 4x800m relay.
The 4x800m relay team won the race at the district meet with their best time of the year.
The Scrapperettes will travel to Hot Springs today for the 4A state meet with field events starting at 11 a.m.
