Scrapperettes finish second in the Coca-Cola Relays April 28, 2008 - No reporter cited image

NASHVILLE - The Scrapperettes continued to prove that they are to be considered among the best in the state in Track and Field Thursday, April 24, at the Coca-Cola relays.

The Scrapperettes finished in second place with a total of 141.5 points, behind 6A Arkansas High, who finished with 158.5 points. The Scrapperettes finished 70.5 points ahead of district rivals, Ashdown (71), who finished in third and 96.5 points ahead of De Queen (45), who finished in fifth place.

With a well-balanced team, the Scrapperettes were able to accumulate points in nine running events and seven field events.

Paige Langston started the day off with a third place finish (94-8) in the discus and followed it with a fourth place finish (33-10.5) in the shotput.

Britney Morgan finished fourth (90-7) in the discus and fifth in the shotput (33-10.5), while teammate Wimberly Hughes finished in eighth place (30-7) in the shotput.

Chelsea Vinyard and Melissa Millwood finished 1-2 in the pole vault, building on the Scrapperette lead with jumps of 8-0 and 7-6 respectively.

The Scrapperettes continued to compete well in the field events with Sherri Ellis and Jasmine Ellis tying for second (4-10) in the high jump and S. Ellis
finishing second overall and J. Ellis finishing fifth overall.

Three Scrapperettes finished in the top eight in the triple jump. J. Ellis was best among the Scrapperettes with a second place finish (36-0), S. Ellis finished fifth (34-3) and Jazmine Stuart finished in seventh (32-4.5)

The Scrapperettes finished the field events with J. Ellis finishing in third (16-1.5) and Millwood finishing in sixth (15-3) in the long jump.

The Scrapperettes carried their success to the track with J. Ellis and Millwood finishing second (15.79) and fourth (17.02) respectively in the 100-meter hurdles. Millwood followed her fourth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a seventh place finish (13.40) in the 100-meter dash.

Jaleesa Jetton finished in sixth place (27.53) in the 200-meter dash, before winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.08.

J. Ellis and Millwood finished second (48.85) and third (49.24) in the 300-meter hurdles.

As the races moved from sprints to distance races, S. Ellis was fast enough for a third place finish (2:35.24) and teammate Rachel Reid finished in seventh place (2:51.09) in the 800-meter run.

Brittany Brown ran the 3200-meter run in 14:41.46, which was good enough for a fifth place finish.

The Scrapperette relay teams placed in three of the four relay events. The 400-meter relay team finished in third place (52.57), the 800-meter relay team finished in fourth place (4:37.5) and the 3200-meter relay team finished in third place (11:46.93).

The Scrapperettes will make the first steps toward repeating as state champions when they compete in the 7-4A district meet May 14 at Ashdown.
