LAKE HAMILTON – Fingers were waving everywhere as the Nashville Scrapperettes celebrated their third consecutive 4A state track championship Thursday, May 14, at Lake Hamilton High School.
The Scrapperettes crushed the competition with a jaw dropping 137.5 points with DeQueen a distant second with 65 points.
This marks the second time that Nashville has pulled off the elusive three-peat since 1999, with the Scrapperettes winning seven of ten state titles in the past ten years.
Jasmine Ellis dominated the event with three wins and set a new state record in the triple jump.
The Scrapperettes started the day with 29 points in the first two field events.
Melissa Millwood and Chelsea Vinyard finished third and fourth respectively in the pole vault with Millwood vaulting nine feet-eight inches and Vinyard topped eight feet-two inches.
Millwood pulled double duty in the morning events, joining J. Ellis in the long jump.
Ellis and Millwood finished one-two in the long jump with Ellis winning with a jump of 16 feet-11.25 inches and Millwood was close behind with 16 feet-ten inches.
The Scrapperette’s success continued on the track with Sherri Ellis, Tiffani Jones, Wimberly Hughes and Rachel Reed finishing in third place in the 4x800m relay with a time of 10:57.86.
All attention turned to the field events at 4:30 p.m. when Freshman Monisa Poole completed a rare track trifecta by winning the high jump with a jump of five feet-four inches. Poole also won the high jump in the Jr. High district track meet April 30, and then won the event at the Sr. High district meet, setting up the rare accomplishment.
J. Ellis finished fourth in the high jump with a jump of five feet.
J. Ellis moved to the triple jump and qualified for the finals with a jump that was one inch shy of a new state record with a jump of 36 feet-seven inches. She wasted no time in shattering the record, jumping 17 feet-one inch in her first jump in the finals of the event. Amazingly, J. Ellis repeated the accomplishment in her next jump.
Sister Sherri also competed in the event and finished third with a personal best of 35 feet.
The focus turned to the track Thursday evening with the finals of the running events starting at 6:30 p.m.
