The Nashville Scrappers took advantage of a rare sunny day as they defeated the Dierks Outlaws 5-2 Friday afternoon at Wilson Park in Nashville.
Neither team was really able to take advantage of the wind blowing into left field, but the Scrappers were able to do enough for the win.
Luke Jamison took the mound for the Scrappers and earned the win with the help of his teammates. Jamison gave up five hits, two runs, one strikeout and four walks for the win.
Cody Chandler started the game for the Outlaws, but struggled through two and two-thirds innings before David Bray came in to finish the game.
Chandler lost control of his pitches in the second inning with two walks and two hit batters. He would walk two more batters and hit two more as well before passing the pitching duties to Bray in the third inning. Chandler left the game with two hits, four unearned runs, seven strikeouts, four walks, and four hit batters for the loss. Bray pitched four and one-third innings with two hits, one run, eight strikeouts, one walk, and one hit batsman.
Michael Milum led the Scrappers into the first inning by figuring in to the first two outs of the game. He fielded a line drive by Chase Mitchell and threw him out at first and then caught a fly ball hit by Bray for the first two outs.
Jamison then walked the next two batters to give the Outlaws runners at first base and second base. It looked like the Outlaws might score when both base runners advanced on a wild pitch thrown by Jamison. With rally caps waving, Chandler hit a line drive through the infield, but was thrown out at first to end the top half of the inning.
Milum tried to get things going for the Scrappers when he attempted a bunt, but was thrown out for the first out. Chandler would then strike out Tyler Serrano to put the Outlaws one out away from ending the inning.
Michael Nava hit a high fly ball to center field which fell in for a base hit. Nava moved to second base when Chandler had a balk called on him when he attempted to throw out Nava at first base. Nava then scored the first run of the game as Jamison recorded his first hit of the game. Bubba Browning brought an end to the inning when he hit a shot to the pitcher and was thrown out at first base.
The Scrappers took advantage of a struggling Chandler in the bottom of the second inning.
Nick Reeves started the inning off by hitting a rocket to right field, which was caught by Ethan Mays for the first out. Chandler then walked Alan Copeland and struck out Cade Richards. Chandler walked Lane Chism and Milum reached base on an error. With bases loaded and two outs, Chandler started to struggle
with his control. He would hit the next two batters scoring two runs before striking out Jamison to end the inning.
The Outlaws couldn’t get anything going offensively and Jamison only faced three batters in the third inning.
Chandler continued to struggle from the mound in the bottom half of the third. He walked Browning to start the inning. Browning would steal second and then moved to third when the cutoff throw at second went over the second baseman’s head.
Chandler would battle through the inning by striking out the next two batters he faced. He would go on to hit Richards when he came up to bat. Richards would advance to second on a wild pitch. Chandler then walked Lane Chism and hit a Scrapper batter for the fourth time, scoring the fourth Scrapper unearned run of the afternoon.
Bray entered the inning and struck Serrano out to end the inning.
Lain Janes stepped to the plate for Ethan Mays to lead off the fifth inning. Janes would get the first Outlaw hit of the game when he beat out a throw to first base. Mays, who reentered the game to run for Janes, reached second when he attempted to steal second and the throw from home went into the outfield. Mays would then advance to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice hit by Mark Hill.
Serrano would score one more run for the Scrappers in the sixth inning. He reached second on a long fly ball deep into right field. He would then move to third on a wild pitch. Nava hit a fly ball to center field, which was caught by Mitchell, but Serrano beat the throw to home plate.
The Outlaws started the seventh inning with a well-hit ball by Simmons, which was caught by Milum for the first out of the inning. Mays would reach second and score on a rocket hit by Hill into left field.
The Outlaws ran out of time as Bray hit a shot directly to Milum who threw him out at first for the final out of the game.
Milum was a play-maker on defense for the Scrappers with four stops and three fly balls caught for outs.
Jamison led the Scrapper offense with two hits and an RBI.
Nava had one hit, one run, one strikeout and one RBI. Serrano had one hit, one run and two strikeouts.
Mays led the Outlaws offense with one hit, two runs and a strikeout. Mark Hill had one hit and two RBI’s.
The Scrappers hope to ride the momentum from this hard fought win to a victory over conference opponent Arkansas Baptist in Little Rock Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The Outlaws have to shake off the loss and get ready for conference rivals Murfreesboro at Dierks on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
