NASHVILLE – The Scrappers improved to 13-6 on the season and 3-2 in conference play with a 4-1 victory over the De Queen Leopards Monday afternoon at Wilson Park.
Nashville scored four runs on one hit, while pitcher Michael Nava scattered four hits, struck out eight and walked two in seven innings of work.
De Queen’s Shane Higgins pitched four innings. He walked seven and struck out five, but gave up no hits. Blake Toye relieved Higgins in the fourth inning. He allowed one hit, while striking out one and walking four.
De Queen had a single in the first, second, third and sixth innings, but the Leopards only score came on two Scrapper errors that allowed Kyle Atkins to score from first base.
De Queen’s Zach Taylor hit a single to right field in the top of the first, but was stranded on base as the Scrapper center fielder Tyler Serrano snagged a deep fly ball off the bat of Higgins. Nava then enticed Bryce Smith to ground-out to first baseman Luke Jamison.
Nashville loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first when Nick Reeves drew a walk from Higgins that scored the first run of the game.
De Queen would once again get a hit in the second, but a runner interference call ended the Leopard’s chances with a double play.
Alan Copeland would draw a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the second. Lane Chism would move Copeland into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
Michael Milum would pick up the RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 2-0, Nashville, after two innings of play.
With two outs, Atkins would hit a single to right field and took second on a throwing error, but he would be thrown out attempting to steal third.
Nashville extended their lead to three in the fourth inning by loading the bases for the second time in the game. Pitch runner Daniel Aylett would score when Serrano drew a bases loaded walk.
De Queen had a chance to score in the fifth with Riley Branson on third and two outs. Nava picked Branson off to end the scoring threat.
New pitcher Toye walked the first batter he faced and gave up a bunt single to Bubba Browning. Jamison scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Reeves.
De Queen showed some glove in the bottom of the sixth. With bases loaded for the third time in the game, Nava hit a line drive to the third baseman Smith.
Smith made the catch and stepped on third to force out the runner on third.
Nava would retire three straight batters in the seventh for the win.
Browning had the Scrappers only hit.
Atkins, Taylor, Higgins and Branson each had a single for the Leopards.
