Scrappers win three events, finish runners-up in 4A State Track Meet May 18, 2009 - No reporter cited

LAKE HAMILTON – The Nashville Scrappers took an early lead Thursday at the 4A state track meet, but were unable to hold off the DeQueen Leopards who won in convincing fashion to earn their second consecutive state title.

The Scrappers’s strength continues to be the field events, scoring 45 of their 63 points off the track.

Tyler Lingo and Josh Wiley started the day with sixth and eighth place finishes respectively in the shot put with throws of 47 feet-six inches and 45 feet-11 inches.

Paul Morrow added six points to the Scrapper total with a third place jump of six feet-one inch in the high jump.

P.J. Armstrong closed out the morning events with the triple jump. Armstrong entered the event with the best jump in the state in 4A competition and earned the Scrappers their first victory of the day with a jump of 42 feet 10.5 inches.

Max Smith started the afternoon field events with a victory in the pole vault. Smith, who is a senior, jumped a personal best of 14 feet.

Tyler Lingo defended his discus title with a throw of 167 feet-five inches, almost 30 feet farther than the second place throw.

Morrow jumped 20 feet-2.25 inches in the long jump, good enough for fourth place in the long jump.

Nashville sat in first place in the standings as the action turned to the track Thursday evening.

Lucas Scott, Nick Hopkins, Scott Harrison and Brandon Witherspoon finished second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 44.33 seconds.

Witherspoon ran the 400m dash in 52.77 seconds, good enough for eighth, and finished fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 23.68 seconds.

Witherspoon, Armstrong, Cameron Lofton and Shawn Kennedy finished the night with a fourth place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:33.87.
