Seniors lead Outlaws to a 18-3 victory over Spring Hill April 21, 2008 - No reporter cited image

The Dierks Outlaws sent the rest of the teams in the AA classification a message, with a 18-3 win over the Spring Hill Bears, Thursday April 17 at the Dierks High School baseball field.

Outlaw pitchers Cody Chandler and David Bray combined for seven strike outs and two walks, while giving up five hits and three runs. Bray entered the game in the third inning and is credited with the save.

Bears pitcher Ryan Sorrels is charged with the loss. Bears pitcher Bryan Whipkey entered the game in the third inning. Both pitchers combined for eight walks and no strike outs, while giving up 13 hits and 18 runs.

The Outlaws started the day by honoring six seniors who were playing their last game before the hometown crowd.

Seniors Eric Billings, Mark Hill, Ethan Mays, Jeremy David Miller, Joey Osborn and Derek Stokes were honored, with their parents standing with them.

Chandler started the game for the seniors, by recording a strikeout against the first batter he faced.

Hill caught a fly ball for the second out before Spring Hill would record their first hit of the game.

Bears third baseman Zach Clark hit a line drive up the third baseline for a hit. Clark would later be tagged out trying to steal second for the third out of the inning.

Dierks would be unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the first inning.

Chase Mitchell would lead off the inning with a walk, but would get tagged out at third later in the inning. The only other offense in the inning was a single by Drew Walston.

The Outlaws were able to get the offense started in the second inning, when Billings led off the inning with a line drive double into left field. Justin Simmons would reach base on an error committed by the Bears shortstop.

Two more batters would reach base with a walk before Mitchell would drive two runs in, with a well hit ball to centerfield.

Bray followed Mitchell to the plate, and cleared the bases with a homerun that just cleared the right field fence to give the Outlaws a 5-0 lead.

The Bears would threaten the Outlaws lead in the top of the third inning.

Whipkey would get things going for the Bears, with a single. Chandler would walk Kellin Hamilton, before Cory Powell would hit a rocket to left centerfield for a double, scoring two much needed runs.

Colton Capps would follow with double of his own, scoring Hamilton for the last run of the day for the Bears.

Bray would replace Chandler on the mound for the Outlaws, and put a stop to the Bear’s rally.

The Outlaws would open things up in the third.

Three of the first four Outlaw batters would reach base on fielding errors, with the fourth reaching on a single.

Bears pitcher Sorrels would walk the next four batters, for eight unearned runs in a row, before he was replaced by teammate Whipley.

Whipley didn’t fair much better. He would give up a ground rule double to Walston, and then a homerun to Chandler before finally putting a
stop to the Outlaws in the bottom half of the third inning.

The Outlaws would add three more runs to their total in the fourth inning, for a winning score of 18-3.

Bray led the Outlaws offensively with one homerun, three runs, three RBI’s and two walks.

Stokes had one hit, three runs and two walks while Chandler had one homerun, two runs and three RBI’s.

Every Outlaw batter reached base at least once, and ten Outlaws scored at least one run.

Powell led the Bears offensively, with one hit, one run and two RBI’s.

Clark had two hits and one run in the losing effort for the Bears.

The Outlaws can finish no worse than tied for first place in district play, and look to finish the season undeafeted in conference play Monday at Caddo Hills.

The district tournament will start Wednesday April 23 in Caddo Hills, with games to be announced Monday or Tuesday.
