NASHVILLE- Residents concerned with developing a farmer’s market met last Tuesday to develop a comprehensive plan for the market.
Howard County is proposing to develop a local farmer’s market as a means for area residents to acquire fresh, locally-grown produce and to provide a centralized location for local farmers, and others with gardens, to sell their produce and supplement their income. The location of the Howard County market will be adjacent to the Howard County Health Department and the Senior Citizens Center.
The nearest farmer’s market is in Texarkana.
“Development of a farmer’s market in Howard County has wide community support, and has been endorsed by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, the Quorum Court, Howard County Farm Bureau, Howard County Health Improvement Coalition, Howard County Health Department and the Economic Development Committee,” Debra Bolding, a Red Dirt Master Gardener, said.
She explained, during the farmer’s market work group planning meeting, that the county’s farmer’s market will work with Natural Resources Conservation Services to finalize an area wide plan.
“An informal work group has performed some preliminary work and planning. In February, Howard County applied for a General Improvement Funds grant to assist with construction of the market pavilion, restroom and storeroom. In March, Howard County applied for another grant through the Arkansas Department of Agriculture. At this time, it is not known whether any assistance will be awarded through any of these applications.”
Those present at the meeting include: Tammy Smith, Max Tackett, Earl Sanders, Rita Rector, Vivian Wright, Mike Reese, Joey Jamison, Brian Bickel, Lou Jamison, Louise Akers and Debra Bolding.
